WEEK 3: Under the Weather

 DAY 11

14 August 2023

My recent health concerns took a surprising turn when I visited the doctor yesterday. With worsening symptoms, I underwent a blood test to uncover the root of the issue. To my surprise, the results led to suspicion of tuberculosis (TB). As a precaution, my doctor prescribed a week of medication and advised a day of rest. The hope is that this treatment will yield positive results, but there's a chance I may need a TB screening if my health doesn't improve. Let's just hope for a swift recovery!

DAY 12

15 August 2023

Good morning to all! Despite still feeling under the weather, I embarked on my day with optimism. Relief classes were on the agenda, but it was a slightly different day. I stepped into 5 Beta, only to discover that most of the students were busy preparing for the upcoming opening ceremony. With only nine students present, I introduced a delightful game, "Action Bingo." This twist on the classic game required students to act out the words they crossed off their bingo cards. It was a blast to see their competitive spirits, and the winners were rewarded with sticky candy. What warmed my heart was the students' kindness in sharing their treats with their friends. After class, I continued to invigilate exams in other classrooms, appreciating my students' understanding of my need for a bit more vocal rest due to my persistent cough.

DAY 13

16 August 2023

The day we've all been waiting for finally arrived, the opening ceremony for Merdeka Month! With most students engaged in the festivities and an exciting talk about motorcycle racing, there were only a few relief classes today. It was my chance to do some personal revision, preparing for the upcoming classes. At 1.10 PM, an academic month briefing was conducted, revealing that the academic month would take place from September 4th to October 2nd. However, our names were inadvertently omitted from the list, given our newcomer status.

Without hesitation, I approached Kak Hannah and volunteered to assist with the performance. I was thrilled when she accepted my offer, especially since I was passionate about choral speaking and had been involved in various on-stage activities since kindergarten. The excitement was palpable, and I couldn't wait to immerse myself in this new endeavor. Although not much happened during the day, I have some event pictures to share. Goodbye for now!

17 August 2023

It is day 17, yall, and there's nothing different than before. It's just the same thing repeatedly, as usual. I entered the class and played some simple games during the relief class. During my free time, I wrote a choral speaking script entitled The Secret of Colours, and I showed it to the other English teachers for them to check whether it was okay or not. Gladly, they said it was okay, so I can proceed to the next level, which is recruiting the students. Kak Hannah stated that she only wants the Form 3 students to participate in the performance, so luckily I have a relief class with Form 3 at 10.50 AM. I asked the students whether they wanted to join or not. After explaining what choral speaking is to them, they agreed to join, and now I have 30 students to teach. The first thing that came to mind was "wow, this is such a big number", and I'm kind of worried about whether I can handle them well or not. But nevertheless, I'll try my best to train them in a short amount of time. Now, I have to finalise my scripts, and they're ready to go!

DAY 15

18 August 2023

Happy Friday, folks! The day began with a Yaasin recital for the students at Laman Bestari. After that, I stayed at Laman Bestari to take over PJK classes, and the students asked if they could play. Fortunately, I was dressed in a jersey, which made it easier to manage them during their PE class.

Today marked my first experience independently handling exams in the school hall. It was an interesting mix of Chinese and Indian students taking Bahasa Cina and Bahasa Tamil papers. Once the exams were over and I had collected the papers, I finally received my teaching schedule. To my surprise, I discovered that I would be handling two different forms with two different mentors. While I had some inkling that this might be the case, it was an exciting revelation.

Puan Elaine, our mentor, generously provided us with textbooks, teacher's books, poems, and everything we might need. With our schedules in hand, we're all set to start teaching on Monday. Wish us luck as we embark on this new chapter!
