WEEK 7: Unexpected Adventures!

DAY 31

11 September 2023

Ah, Monday—the day when the week begins anew—and this time, it brought with it something special: picture day. The theme for today was red chilli, and the entire school was draped in vibrant shades of crimson. As someone who usually steers clear of bright colours, this was quite a challenge for me. The sea of red was dizzying, but it was heartwarming to see everyone come together in the same hue. Maybe next time we can opt for a more soothing colour, I thought.

As the day progressed, it felt like any other day at first. But then something extraordinary happened. I began practicing with my choral speaking team—a passion of mine since my early school days. It's been years since I actively participated in such activities, and the chance to relive it with my students felt surreal. I've always dreamt of sharing these experiences with my students, knowing the joys and bonds formed in a team. Today, that dream became a reality.

Rehearsing with the choral speaking team was a reminder of the magic that can happen when a group of individuals come together to create something beautiful. The excitement in the students' eyes mirrored my own, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of fulfillment. It's moments like these that make the dizzying sea of red and the hustle of a regular Monday seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Here's to more shared passions and colourful memories in the days to come.

DAY 32

12 September 2023

Today, my day started as usual, with me teaching my three Kosmik classes and handling a relief class. Little did I know that a surprise awaited me in the morning—I was appointed the teacher in charge for the week. The initial shock and nervousness soon subsided, thanks to the kindness and support of my colleagues. In my newfound role, I was responsible for overseeing school assemblies, managing the assembly logbook, delivering announcements, and assisting students in need. This role turned out to be more complex than I anticipated, especially on my first day. However, I'm committed to learning and improving throughout the week, with the guidance of my fellow teachers. It's an unexpected adventure, and I'm ready to embrace the challenge and grow as an educator.

DAY 33

13 September 2023

Today, I embarked on a hectic yet fulfilling day as a practicum English teacher in Malaysia. My morning was divided between two classes: Form 3, where I taught grammar, and Form 4, where I conducted a spirited debate to boost their speaking skills. In my Form 3 class, we delved into the world of grammar, specifically focusing on first and zero conditionals. It was a rewarding experience to see my students grasp these concepts and apply them to real-life situations. The engagement and enthusiasm they displayed were truly heartwarming. Teaching grammar might seem daunting, but it's moments like these that remind me why I chose to be a teacher.

My Form 4 students, on the other hand, were immersed in the world of debate. It was a day for them to sharpen their speaking and critical thinking skills. The debate was lively, and the students' arguments were thought-provoking. I watched as they grew in confidence, articulating their ideas with passion and conviction. It was a proud moment for me as a teacher to witness their progress.

After school, I took on a new role as the school band's musical theatre director for the closing ceremony of academic month that will be held earlier next month. Balancing choral speaking rehearsals with guiding the musical theatre team was a challenging but rewarding experience. Despite the whirlwind, I cherish the passion and enthusiasm of my students, which continues to fuel my teaching journey, making each day a remarkable adventure on this path of education and music.

DAY 34

14 September 2023

Today is Thursday, it's still picture week so some of my students are not in class during my period. I had a single class with 4 Beta, and I decided to introduce them to a fresh and creative approach to poetry. Inspired by a memorable assignment from my degree, I challenged my students to adapt three distinct poems into unique role-plays. I divided them into three groups, each receiving a different poem: A poison tree, The quarrel and What has happened to Lulu. First, I read and explained the poem to them. I dedicated the entire period for them to brainstorm and shape their storylines. The anticipation is high as they eagerly work on their projects, and we're all looking forward to the exciting presentations scheduled for next Wednesday. It's moments like these that remind me of the power of creativity and collaboration in the classroom. Stay tuned for more updates on our poetic journey!

DAY 35

15 September 2023

As the week comes to a close, today brought a special treat for all of us in Malaysia as we celebrated the closing ceremony of National Month. The day began with high hopes as I had a class scheduled with my three eager 3 Kosmik students. However, the excitement of the national events taking place led to an extended schedule, and our lesson had to be postponed. The reason? It was a spectacle like no other. Students from all grades showcased their talents, and the performances left us in awe. From traditional dances that celebrated our rich culture to the harmonious voices of the choir and even a mesmerizing reenactment of the Team Merdeka dance that had graced our TV screens during Merdeka, it was a visual feast. Witnessing these performances live in front of my own eyes was a heartwarming experience. It's days like these that remind us of the unity and diversity that make Malaysia a truly special place. Happy Malaysia Day to all!
