WEEK 12: Observations, Challenges, and Growth = A Rollercoaster Week

DAY 56

16 October 2023

On October 16th, my role as an invigilator took center stage as I was tasked with supervising the SPM Lisan examinations for Bahasa Cina and Bahasa Tamil. This responsibility meant that I couldn't enter my regular classes that day, as I needed to focus on monitoring the SPM candidates throughout the entire day. It was a unique and enriching experience to be on the other side of the examination process, ensuring its integrity and smooth conduct.

Once school was over, I sought the company of a friend to help me in the next crucial step of my journey. We set out to find the necessary tools and resources for my upcoming observation with my lecturer, scheduled in just a few days. Additionally, I double-checked my lesson plan, which was integral to my teaching assessment. The nerves were certainly present, as I knew the significance of this observation. I couldn't help but hope for a successful outcome, and I was determined to make it a positive experience.

DAY 57

17 October 2023

When the following day arrived, I went back to teaching my classes as usual. There was, yet, a nagging sense of expectation in the air since I knew my lecturer would make an important observation the next day. I dedicated all of my free time to getting ready for this important day. I could feel the weight of the impending observation, and I was resolved to try my hardest.

My lecturer and I had a consultation in the evening. I had a mental breakdown throughout this conversation as a result of the pressure starting to get to me. I was having too much tension about the upcoming observation, and I was finding it difficult to remain calm. But fortunately for me, I had friends and roommates who actually looked out for me when I needed them. Their assistance was invaluable in helping me regain my calm and prepare my lesson.

I am so appreciative of the kind and compassionate people in my life. Their encouragement and support were crucial in getting me through a difficult time. With their assistance, I felt more equipped and ready to approach the impending observation with resiliency and confidence.

p/s: no picture because it's a tough day haha

DAY 58

18 October 2023

My observation with my lecturer was finally here, the day I had been waiting for and dreading. I couldn't help but feel anxious because I knew that this was going to be a crucial time in my teaching career. But as the observation went on, I settled into a groove, and all in all, I believe it went rather smoothly. Of course, I made mistakes occasionally during the exercises, just like with any other encounter. But isn't that the main purpose of growth? Acknowledging your mistakes and aiming for continuous development.

The insightful advice and remarks I got from Madam Shafina was one thing that really helped. Her criticism was intelligent and helpful, providing me with a road map for developing as a teacher. It served as a helpful reminder that teaching is a process with constant opportunity for improvement. Having completed two observations satisfactorily, I feel more assured and ready to tackle the next. Every encounter serves as a springboard for me to become a more skilled educator, and I look forward to the chances for development that lie ahead.

DAY 59

19 October 2023

The 19th of October was an extremely busy day at the school. Due to the over 25 absent teachers, I had a full schedule of class relief duties. Despite the staffing limitations, it was a demanding and hectic day when we had to move from one session to another to make sure the kids had a worthwhile learning experience. I even had to teach geography all of a sudden during the relief class.

I managed to take a breather amidst the mayhem as I walked into the 4 Beta. To improve their confidence and public speaking abilities, this class had asked for a debate session. "What is the best way to spend the weekend?" was the day's topic. Going out for the day or spending it at home?" Their excitement was encouraging, and I was pleased with how far they had come since their last debate. Their self-assurance was palpable, and it was obvious that this activity improved their speaking skills.

This event served as a reminder of the students' and teachers' tenacity and fortitude on difficult days. It served as evidence of the benefits of hands-on learning activities like debates, which enhance critical thinking and speaking abilities while also boosting confidence.
When Friday finally arrived at the end of the week, not much was scheduled. I went to my classes as usual after that. In the classroom, pupils were going about their daily lives as usual, enjoying a relaxed day. There was a general sense of relaxation and excitement for the upcoming weekend.

I spent most of my leisure time getting ready for the floor game that was coming the next week. I asked my housemate for assistance to make it all work. We collaborated to perfect the game's elements, and it was wonderful to have a helpful partner in this project. This cooperative effort increased the enthusiasm and made the preparation process easier and more pleasurable.
